Are You Overdue for an Eye Exam?

Patients with diabetes need to have their eyes examined more often than the average patient does. The American Diabetes Association recommends having your eyes examined at least once a year if you have diabetes, however, your doctor may recommend more frequent exams. Always follow your doctor’s recommendations.

Diabetes’ Effects on the Eyes

Glaucoma

People with diabetes are twice as likely to develop glaucoma, which typically causes slow but permanent vision loss. Glaucoma is a rise in the intraocular pressure, which damages the optic nerve.

Diabetes increases your risk of developing age-related macular degeneration; a disease that slowly damages your central vision, causing you to lose the ability to read and recognize faces. Age-related macular degeneration is caused by deposits called drusen or scar tissue developing around the macula.

High blood glucose levels can eventually damage blood vessels in the retina. The damaged blood vessels can then leak fluid into the retina, causing the retina to swell resulting in distorted vision. In particularly advanced cases, diabetic retinopathy causes retinal scarring and permanent vision loss.

When diabetic retinopathy continues to progress, it can develop into diabetic macular edema or DME. As damaged blood vessels continue to leak fluid into the retina, the fluid can seep under the macula causing it to swell, leading to the loss of central vision.
